What is stored in your browser
Your pantry list, dietary preferences and saved favourites are stored in your browser using localStorage. They stay on your device and are not tied to an account. Clearing your browser data removes them.
What is sent to our server
When you use the pantry page to find matches, the ingredients in your pantry list are sent to our server so matches can be calculated across the full recipe collection. They are used to produce that one set of results. They are not stored or logged.
Our hosting provider sets a cookie used to route requests correctly. This is needed for the site to work and does not identify you.
Advertising
The site is funded by advertising, using Google AdSense.
Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve and measure ads, which may include ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. Where consent is required, you are asked before this happens, and you can change or withdraw your consent at any time using the privacy settings link in the consent banner.
Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can manage personalised advertising at adssettings.google.com.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are used. It sets cookies and collects information including the pages you view, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and your device and browser type. We use it in aggregate to understand how the site is used, not to identify individuals.
Affiliate links
Some outbound links may be affiliate links. If you follow one and make a purchase, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships do not affect which recipes are shown or how they are ranked.
Third parties
These third parties may process data when you use the site:
- Google AdSense, for advertising
- Google Analytics, for site statistics
- Our hosting provider, for serving the site
- Wikimedia, which hosts the recipe photographs and will see your IP address when your browser loads them
Recipe text comes from the Wikibooks Cookbook, TheMealDB and Spoonacular. Browsing this site does not send your data to those sources.
Your rights
Data protection law in many countries gives you rights over personal data held about you, including rights of access, correction and deletion. Which rights apply depends on where you live.
We do not hold accounts or personal records, so in most cases there is nothing for us to retrieve or delete. Google holds its own data from advertising and analytics, and its privacy policy and controls are linked above. If you want to make a request of us, use the contact details below.
